Cycling body, PWD spar over Sukma track

THE finger-pointing over who should be held responsible for the deplorable state of the cycling events’ infrastructure at the recent 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma) has begun, reported New Straits Times today.

The Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) and the state Public Works Department (PWD) yesterday were at loggerheads as each claimed the other should be blamed. 

SCA secretary Zulaihi Seri said PWD should be held responsible for the lack of infrastructure at the BMX track.

Raids shock cycling circle

KUALA LUMPUR: Shock swept through the cycling community following news of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) raids in Kuching on Monday, as investigations into the Malaysia Games cycling fiasco continue, reported by New Straits Times today.

Most initially thought that the shoddy props and barely existent safety barricades at the biennial Games’ cycling events were due to a lack of funds, and so, the news of the raids caught them by surprise. 

Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School cycling coordinator Othman Rashid was among those who thought that the events were poorly organised due to a lack of funds. 

US-based Aslina Chua should be considered for SEA Games tryout

Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) wants its SUKMA gold medalist Aslina Chua to be considered for a tryout for the SEA Games tennis national team.

The association's Junior Development Program exco member Stevie Din said the lass' impressive performance during the games should make her as a strong candidate to join the national team.

"...she (has) give(n) her best (in the SUKMA games) ... and ... she is the best women's tennis player" for the State SUKMA tennis team, said the exco member in his Whatsapp message to The Kuching Sports News recently.

Abdul Karim shocked at MACC's action

Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was shocked when he heard news on the investigation of cycling officials by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC).

He said he was in the dark about the investigation because as far as he was concerned, in terms of management of the association, it has been well managed and transparent in its affairs.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Youth and Sports Assistant Minister, was quoted by an a local English daily yesterday.

MACC raids homes of 2 cycling officials in Kuching

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized documents related to the organisation of cycling events at the just concluded Malaysia Games, reported New Straits Times today.

It is learnt that MACC officials raided the homes of two cycling officials in Kuching on Monday. 

A source revealed that one of the homes raided was also used as the office of the sports body. 

Karim is not happy

The state SUKMA XVIII chef de mission Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah admitted that he was not happy.

While he was pleased with the performance of the athletes, he was not happy with the state contingent's failure to be crowned as the games' overall champions.

"To say that I'm happy, not really because I fail to achieve the overall success for the Sarawak state," he said as quoted by a local Malay daily on last Monday.

Will heads roll over 15 missing gold?

All eyes are now fixated on the State sports supremo.

Will he perform a surgery to fix any problem in sporting bodies that had caused the State to lose the Sukma overall champions crown to Selangor?

By and large, he should do it because it is something expected from a sports supremo.

Khairul and Nur Aqilah best athletes of 18th Sukma

KUCHING: Malacca’s sprint sensation Khairul Hafiz Jantan was as surprised as anyone that he would shatter two Sukma records, erased the national 100m record and be crowned Best Male Athlete on his debut in the just concluded 18th Malaysia Games.

“I believe that it was my training regime which had brought me to who I am today and, whatever it is, I am happy with my progress at the moment,” he said.

The 18-year-old revealed that he would be focusing on his studies after this before competing in the Malaysian Open next.

S’wak mempunyai perancangan maksimum legasi SUKMA ke-18

 

KUCHING: Kerajaan Negeri mempunyai perancangan untuk memaksimumkan legasi Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Ke-18 bagi membangun serta mengembangkan atlet-atlet negeri pada masa sama mencungkil bakat-bakat baharu.

Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Ghani berkata Kementerian Belia, Sukan dan Perpaduan dan Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak (MSNS) bersama persatuan-persatuan sukan negeri ini mempunyai perancangan memanfaat kemudahan- kemudahan sukan SUKMA XVIII.

“Sejajar dengan usaha kerajaan negeri, persatuan-persatuan sukan di negeri ini boleh menggunakan venue sedia ada untuk menganjurkan acaraacara sukan atau kejohanan peringkat kebangsaan,” katanya di sini semalam.

Kuching, Kota Samarahan to host 18th National Paralympiad

KUCHING: A total of 1,400 athletes will take part in the 18th National Paralympiad to be held in Kuching and Kota Samarahan from Aug 6-10.

A total of nine sports will be contested by athletes with disabilities such as blindness, mentally challenged and spasticity who are out to make a name for themselves at the national level.
