Sarawak hopes KBS to support its request for a sports school

KUCHING (MatthewUmpang): Sarawak needs a dedicated sports school soon and the state government is coun ting on other ministries to help.

During the Sarawak Squash Centre key ceremony held at the centre yesterday, Ministry of Youth and Sports and Solidarity (KBSS) permanent secretary Kameri Affendi expressed hope that the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will be positive to Sarawak’s request for a new sports school to be built in the state soon.

He opined that the state needs a sports school like the ones in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur and Bandar Penawar (in Johor) for the development of sports talent in the state.

“I know that building a sports school is not in the jurisdiction of KBS but I am hoping that the ministry can help by giving a recommedation to the ministry responsible which is the Ministry of Education. We hope it will support our request,” he added.

With the only two sports schools located in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawakians who excell in sports are torn between leaving home and family if they choose sports as a major.

KBS (management) principal secretary Nik Abdul Kadir Nik Mohamad on the other hand commented that his ministry will do their best for the people of Sarawak.

“Although KBS is not responsible for building sports schools in the state, I do understand that Sarawak needs a sports school of its own. KBS will help in whatever way possible,” he said.

Kadir was officiating at the key handing over ceremony of the new Sarawak Squash Centre here yesterday.

Also present then were officials from the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), Public Works Department (JKR), Squash Racquets Association (SRAM), Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak (SRAS) and representatives from the centre’s architects and contractors. -TheBorneoPost
