KUCHING: SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab’s (Shoaw) stranglehold on the Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC) School Sevens Rugby Championship was finally broken when MRSM Kuching A team upset the perenial powerhouse 10-5 in the U18 Cup final at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Ground last Sunday.
It was an historic achievement as MRSM Kuching scored a ‘double first,’ winning the U18 Cup and beating Shoaw both for the first time.
MRSM won all their matches in the group stage, blanking Kolej Vokasional Betong 12-0, SMK Sungai Maong 19-5 and SMK Muara Tuang 17-0 before disposing of Shaow B 21-0 in the last eight and SMK Muara Tuang 12-5 in the semi-finals.
“Yes, we were surprised with the win especially that Shoaw and Kolej Abdillah were always the two top teams in the championship. Shoaw were also shocked by the loss,” said MRSM Kuching head coach Vincent Nelos.
MRSM Kuching made the U15 final last year but lost to Shoaw.
“I would like to congratulate my boys for playing so well in this tournament and also congratulations to Shoaw head coach Zulkaranainhisham Sarbini and his boys for reaching the U18 and U15 Cup finals.
“Our appreciation also goes to the school management especially our principal Zuraida Zaidi and teachers involved in rugby for their strong support,” added Vincent.
Apart from winning the U18 Cup, MRSM B claimed the U15 Plate after beating SM Sains Utara Kuching 19-0 in the final.
The U15 Cup was won by Shoaw who beat SMK Muara Tuang in the final.
Winners of the U18 Plate, Bowl and Spoon were SMK Muara Tuang, SMK Asajaya and Kolej Vokasional Betong respectively while the U15 Bowl and Spoon winners were SMK Tebedu and Kolej Abdillah. -TheBorneoPost
