KUCHING: Bank Rakyat is honoured to support the Hornets Softball Club of SMK Green Road with sponsorship, said its Simpang Tiga branch manager Huzaimi Ali yesterday.
He said the bank wants to close the gap between the corporate sector and the school by coming in as a sponsor for the special club.
“I hope the school will continue to produce more quality softball players who will not only go on to represent the state but also country,” he said during a sponsorship presentation at SMK Green Road on Tuesday.
Huzaimi also handed over a cheque of RM1,520 from Bank Rakyat to Hornets Softball Club for purchase of jerseys.
Accompanying Huzaimi was Bank Rakyat Simpang Tiga branch unit head Muhammad Helmi Mohd Zin. Senior assistant (administration) Lau Choon Teng, who represented school principal Catherine Ritikos @ Fiziah Abdullah, highlighted the courage and desire of the school’s softballers to maintain their outstanding achievements and becoming one of the best teams in the state since competing in divisional and state tournaments in 2011.
For the record, SMK Green Road teams emerged champions for three times from 2011 to 2015.
The achievements include MSSM Kuching first runners-up this year, helping Kuching win the MSS Sarawak championship in Bintulu in August 2016, Asyraf Haizan Ramle named as best hitter in MSS Sarawak 2016 and three players selected to the state team for the MSSM Softball Championship in Pahang this year.
Meanwhile, Hornets Softball Club chief advisor Juraimie Junaidi recorded the club and school’s appreciation to Bank Rakyat for the financial support as well as support from the school management, teachers, parents and students for making the school a powerhouse in softball.
“We hope that the relevant softball authorities will recognise our achievements and give us the chance to contribute our expertise and knowledge to help the Sarawak team pose a strong challenge at the national championship.
He said softball being an elite sport that has received encouraging support from several schools in the state, the state authorities should pay more attention to its promotion and development.
“We would like to urge more from the corporate sector to come forward as sponsors because softball needs much financial and morale support to make it popular like other sports such as cricket,” he added.
