Kuching is certain to be under intense pressures to retain the title in the second edition of Liga Bolasepak Rakyat (LBR).
Sarawak FA (FAS) vice president Razali Dolhan opined many districts now realised that the league could provide a platform to progress in the national-level football.
Therefore, he told TheKuchingSportsNews, these districts would start to give extra attention to the league.
However, Razali was confident that Kuching had the capability to win the league's second edition.
Kuching defeated Padang Besar 3-1 in the final in May this year.
Meanwhile Kuching have been given the honour as venue for the kick-off of the Liga Bola Sepak Rakyat (LBR) starting from Sept 24, LBR chairman Datuk Shamsul Anwar Sulaiman said in a press conference at a renowned local hotel yesterday.
“The kick-off to the 2nd Liga Bola Sepak Rakyat will be held in Kuching to give respect to Kuching who are the defending champions,” he said, reported a local English daily today.
According to Shamsul, adding cheer and merriment to the kick-off will be a carnival organised by main sponsor Bank Rakyat and a friendly between a Sarawak Selection and a LBR team.
On the LBR, he said 12 teams will be vying for top honours in Borneo Zone II. “Kuching, Samarahan, Serian and Sri Aman are drawn in Group A while Miri, Bintulu, Limbang and Mukah are in Group B whereas Betong, Sibu, Kapit and Sarikei are in Group C.
“The draws are conducted with the logistics in mind to enable all teams to compete in the league,” said Shamsul who added that the number of teams remained at 108 teams throughout the country and the league is expected to finish at end of April next year.
He said the format for this year’s edition will be different where each team must field 10 players aged 21 and below, as well as the final to be played home-and-away.
The LBR is organised by the FA of Malaysia for a period of 10 years as an initiative to give opportunity to young players.
Also present at the press conference were LBR operations head Azman Ibrahim and FAS vice president Haidel Heli.
