Two cyclists find solace in national championships after being overlooked for SUKMA



The Sarawak team at the National BMX Championship and Cross Country National Championship in Gombak, Selangor.

KUCHING: Two cyclists overlooked for the state squad in the recently concluded Sarawak Sukma XVIII gave creditable performances at the National BMX Championships and Cross Country National Championships in Gombak, Selangor recently.

Hartih Zaki was fourth fastest in the BMX time trial but finished sixth overall after having meeting with an accident in the final round while Ariana Nurminda finished first runner-up in her event.

Another state cyclist Aidwin Agun who accompanied the duo as their coach also competed in the BMX National Championship Challenge Grouth and he won his event.

Faiz was fourth in the Cross Country National Championships and seventh in the UCI Asia Junior Cross Country event and assistant coach Laurel Lauridsen finished third in both the the National Championship and UCI Asia Elite Cross Country.

They all obtained valuable UCI points which put them on the international UCI rankings list.

Part-time development coach Supian Noir also participated in the Cross Country National Championships and won in his age category.

Newcomer Nik Nadila Nik Idris was fourth in National BMX Championships and fifth in the UCI Asia Cross Country event.

Charles Kin Diking competed in Cyfora Mountain Bike Marathon Race Series and was placed second in the Men’s Open.

Overal, it was a very good weekend for the Sarawak cyclists.

Sarawak cycling coach Leon Schepers said that cyclists who are interested in being considered for possible selection for the 2018 Sukma must continue their training and not stop now.

The Sarawak State Sports Council will soon announce try-outs which will form a basis for the selection criteria for the next 2018 Sukma Games. -TheBorneoPost
