KUCHING (JeremyVeno): Minister of Youth, Sports and Solidarity Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong has called on state athletes to reach for the stars to make Sarawak emerge as the champions in the upcoming 18th Sukma.

“Each of you are already a champion when you are selected to represent the state. That is why we are targeting to bag at least 72 gold medals in this year’s games,” said Manyin to a rousing applause from the athletes during the meet-and-greet session held at a shopping mall here yesterday.

Manyin also challenged the athletes to strive for glory and leave a legacy for themselves and Sarawak.

A total of 315 athletes, officials and cheer groups comprising 200 volunteers participated in the meet-and-greet session which also served as a key publicity platform for the national games which will take place from July 22 to 31.

Kuching and Kota Samarahan will be hosting a total of 19 sports.

The opening ceremony on July 23 and the closing ceremony on July 31 will both be held at the Sarawak Stadium here.

Badminton and volleyball will be hosted by Sibu while sailing, karate and sepak takraw will be competed in Miri.

Yesterday’s event marked another major chapter in the prelude to Sukma Sarawak 2016 following the Baton Run and the 100 Days Countdown launched on March 13 and April 23 respectively.

Also present at the meet-and-greet session yesterday were the state contingent’s chef de mission Datuk Karim Rahman Hamzah, state secretary Tan Sri Morshidi Ghani and Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee. -TheBorneoPost
