KUCHING (TingTiengHee): The Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (Asas) wants to fully utilise facilities at the new Sarawak Aquatics Stadium by organising more competitions to promote and develop water sports in the state.
Asas president Dato Wee Hong Seng has revealed that the association is organising seven local and national competitions this year.
“After the RM18 million Sarawak Aquatic Stadium was completed in April and handed over to the State government, we have conducted a Sukma trial run by organising the Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship cum Sukma Selection Trial in March.
“We shall be hosting Sukma XVIII swimming competition from July 23-27 and that will be Sukma Paralympics in Aug 6-8, National Age Group Diving Championship from Sept 11 and 59th National Water Polo Championships in Sept 16-18, Kotas Inter Primary and Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, Fina World Grand Prix Diving Championships from Oct 18-23, and complete our swimming calendar by hosting the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Inter Club Swimming Championship in early December,” said Wee.
Another eight to ten competitions for swimming, diving and water polo are also being planned for next year.
“Through organising more activities and competitions, we are hoping to create more awareness among the public, promote water sports and raise the standards of our swimmers, divers and water polo players,” he explained.
Apart from the Sarawak Sukma swimmers and divers, the Kuching Amateur Swimming Association 2010 is also using the Sarawak Aquatics Stadium as their training base.
Meanwhile, Asas in coordination with the Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak State Sports Council and relevant authorities, will be conducting a final dry run for the swimming competition at the stadium one week before the competition.
“Although the trial run during the Sarawak Age Group was satisfactory, there are still areas for improvement especially on the logistics and technical aspects,” said Wee.
Asas has trained 44 local technical officials and they will be led by 13 officials from the national swimming body Asum. -TheBorneoPost
