KUCHING (MatthewUmpang): David Usop was announced as Sarawak’s new head coach by the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) on Saturday.
David served as interim head coach for the Crocs since the departure of Datuk K Rajagobal in May.
“Based on his capabilities, we have decided to appoint him as the Crocs’ head coach for this season.
Based on his track record, we are confident that he is the right candidate for the job,” FAS president Datu Sudarsono Osman told reporters during the breaking of fast event held that day.
David’s appointment appears to have won the backing of many local fans who felt a Sarawak-born coach would be better suited for the job.
His insistence on developing Sarawak football talents rather than an over-reliance on imported players have proven to be popular with fans.
The appointment ended David’s second stint as interim head coach of the Crocs.
He first took the helm from Robert Alberts last season and proved effective in saving the Crocs who were in danger of being relegated from the Super League.
This year, Rajagobal led the squad through a string of uninspiring performances, winning once and drawing thrice in 11 matches.
David has won both matches since Rajagobal left.
When contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday, David said he was very grateful for the opportunity to serve the state.
“Opportunities like this do not come knocking often and I believe that I can do something for the state football team.
I will do whatever it takes to bring in the good results for Sarawak so that the fans have reasons to be singing praises and enthusiastic in supporting the team as long as I am head coach,” he added. -TheBorneoPost
