The young players in the Sarawak team have still a long way to reach national standards while the more experienced are Marcus Sim, Jess Tay, Ma Si Yi and Jean Wong Zhi Xuan, all retained from the last Sukma outing.

Other states have national and professional players in their teams who have won Asian, British and many international tournaments, including doubles, so the gap is very far.

SUKMA 2016: Why takraw didn't go for gold?, asked former boss

KUCHING: Former Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) president Datuk Paruwadi Musa has called on takraw players to dream big and go for gold since the Sukma games is coming to town.

He thinks it inappropriate that the state has no medal target, least of all gold, for the coming national games which Sarawak will host from July 22 to 31.

“We are playing in Sarawak this time… how can we not afford to try and win any medal at the coming Sukma? We have home advantage and we should make use of that as a golden opportunity,” he added.

He would nevertheless settle for any colour but gold would be the best ending this time around.

Paruwadi’s reasoning is that if the state team managed a bronze outing at the Melaka Sukma (2010) and a silver medal at Pahang Sukma (2012), there is no reason why Sarawak cannot win at least a gold medal at Sukma XVIII.

The state takraw team are not targetting any gold medal but are hopeful to strike medals in the team event, men’s and women’s doubles.

Miri will host the sepak takraw event and the state sepak takraw team are scheduled to travel to there tomorrow (July 10).

Paruwadi was speaking to reporters after receiving them at his Hari Raya open house in Kampung Rampangi here on Wednesday. -TheBorneoPost
