KUCHING: The 3rd Kuching Marathon, which attracted over 8,000 participants yesterday, can become a major international event for Kuching.

According to Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Hui Kian, the large numbers which included significant foreign participation make it viable to shift into a larger event.

“I strongly feel that Kuching Marathon has a potential to grow as a signature event. We want the level to be similar to the New York Marathon, Boston Marathon or Sydney Marathon which attracted large numbers of participants all over the world,” Sim said.

He lauded the efforts of the organisers and both the Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) and Kuching City South Commission (MBKS).

“I also would like to congratulate the winners, particularly the winners for the amazing feat. Not forgetting some senior citizens over 60 who even completed the 42KM run,” he added.

Kenyan runners dominated the full and half marathon races.

In the men’s 42km event, John Lorrono Lorira won in 2hr 27:22 ahead of compatriots Samson Tenai Kiplagat (2:38:08) and Bosuben Benard (2:38:35).

Susan Jemutai led the Kenyan sweep of the women’s race. She completed the course in 2:55:02 followed by Fridah Chepkemoi (2:57:05) and Esther Wambui Karimi (3:07:43).

In the 21km event, Malaysian Muhammad Firdaus Abdul Rashid managed third spot in 1:27.46 behind Kenyans Joseph Mwangi (1:06.59) and Paul Eyane (1:07:01).

Another Malaysian Leh Ha Leeat also finished third in the women’s event in 1:43.49 following Beatrice Jepkorir (1:25:35) and Gladys Jepkechei (1:25:35). -TheBorneoPost
