The Motocross of Borneo, Sarawak series which will take place at the motocross track in Kampung Serikin, Bau on Aug 27-28 will feature more than 80 bikers and teams from Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
A statement distributed to the media said the event promised to be one of the best off-road motorcycle racing series in Borneo as competitors tackle the challenging man-made track with double jumps, single jumps, table-tops and rolling waves.
The event aims to revive the love of motocross racing in Sarawak as well as position the state as a motorsports hub in Borneo.
“Through this event, local riders with potential will also be selected to represent Malaysia in the upcoming FIM Asia Motocross Championship 2016,” the media statement stated.
The event has also attracted the attention of international and national media which would bring exposure to what is hoped will become an annual event.
During a press conference on Saturday, Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the event would greatly promote Bau as a tourist attraction.
To coincide with the event, Henry said Bau Bike Week, which is his brainchild, would kick off on Aug 27 with the similar objective of promoting Bau town which was once a prominent gold mining site.
Co-organised by Royale Riders, Bikers Dayak Borneo and Ti’kuan Bikers Club, visitors can anticipate fun and thrilling activities such as remote control boat races, an arm wrestling competition, the best lady biker attire contest, best modified car, and motorcycle competitions.
Apart from the best lady attire contest which is free to participate in, all other contests have a minimum participation fee of RM30.
Other activities include exhibitions from various government departments and non-government organisations (NGOs), lucky draws, a live band, karaoke and automotive exhibitions.
“For this Bau Bike Week, we are expecting about 450 bikes, including high-powered ones,” Henry said.
He gave his assurance that the event would be held on a bigger scale next year and that the organisers would work with Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
“We will organise a bigger event next year and place it under the state tourism calendar year,” he said.
