KUCHING: State cager Tsok Kian Hong has turned down a dream offer to join the national squad for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games next year.
It was a painful decision for the 26-year-old talented key player of Lord Tiger Basketball Club who chose career over national duty.
Tsok, who dons the No. 7 jersey for Lord Tiger, has the qualities of a star with his good looks and excellent skills on the basketball court and has always been the main component of the team.
He helped Lord Tiger win the 3rd Simon Wong Wee Khiong Cup Kuching Division Basketball Championship on Monday and got the national call-up recently.
“It was my dream since young to join the national team one day and train with the best cagers in the country. This is a golden chance for me but I have to consider my career which is now on a good footing and my responsibility to the company and I can’t just resign now to complete my dream,” he lamented.
“To join the national team and prepare for the SEA Games challenge, I need to train for at least one year and that will adversely affect my work,” Tsok pointed out.
“If I had gotten this offer when I was younger and without work and life commitments, I won’t hesitate to accept the offer,” he added.
The Kuching-born Tsok took to basketball since he was 11 years old while he was studying at SJK Stampin and trained under Bong Hon Fah.
He became a state boy representative at age 16 and two years later was selected as the state youth cager.
Tsok was a member of the state basketball squad in Malacca Sukma in 2010 and after he left school, he has been a persistent performer for Sarawak at the Agong’s Cup.
He joined Lord Tiger Basketball Club in 2013 and played for the Miri Firehorse in the 2nd Malaysian National Basketball League (MNBL) and played for Lord Tiger in the 1st East Malaysia Basketball League (EBL) in 2015.
Tsok, who doubles as a points guard and forward, has good sprint and is always feared by the opponents for his sharp shooting and offensive skills.
“I am now placing my focus on improving my skills, keeping fit and treat EBL as a good challenge,” said Tsok who may answer the national call-up in the future. -TheBorneoPost
