Its chairman Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also Assistant Minister of Tourism, said it would be a pleasure to be part of this world record breaking event.
“I am humbled to be invited to be the first person to be walking together with my team,” he said at the press conference with the organiser of Imagine Retrowalk Charity Event at his office yesterday.
“It is simple because they only require us to walk. At the same time it is difficult because they are to walk backward or retro-walk,” he added.
Though it would be troublesome to walk backward alone, however with the company of friends as a team the event would be a bliss, he quipped.
“It is always helpful to have friends who are willing to share our difficulties to enlighten the burden as this event also supports charitable cause,” he enthused.
At the same time, Talib hoped that the event will create awareness that retro-walking is a good form of alternative exercise as it uses different sets of muscles unlike normal walking.
To be held at the Kuching Waterfront, which itself is a significant landmark for the state, he said SEDC was very excited about the event.
He assured that SEDC would give whatever assistance it could to make the event a success.
“We hope the event will be a great success and make us proud to be Malaysian and foremost Sarawak Boleh!” he said.
Meanwhile earlier in the press conference, the organising chairman of Imagine Retrowalk Charity Event, Winnie Lim, said besides the world record breaking attempt the event is to raise funds for charitable bodies which they have identified namely Sarawak Autistic Association, Hope Place, Sarawak Cancer Association, Habitat for Humanity and Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim.
Lim disclosed that the first retro-walk record was made in China in 2012 with 1,039 participants; it was broken by India on Aug 15, 2014 with 1,207 participants.
“This time Imagine is attempting to break India’s record and is confident it will be a great success on Oct 11, 2014,” she said.
It is expected to be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who will be accompanied by Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan.
Among those present at the press conference were 1BFF Club president Keith Sim, event organising chairman Cilla Balla and event advisor Audie Chua.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Social Development.
