Young Crocs' winning streak hit a downfall

MALACCA: Sarawak's top scorer Abdul Rahim Abdul Razak got the short end of the stick in the quarterfinal match against Sekolah Sukan Tengku Mahkota Ismail today.

He could not repeat the sterling performance when the Young Crocs were playing in the group stage of the U-19 Youth Cup.

The young lad failed to find his awesome scoring touch at the 88th minute when he had the best opportunity to revive the team's chances to cruise to the semifinal.

He tapped the ball over the bar.

About twenty minutes earlier, the sport school scored a penalty kick to make the scoreline 1-nil.

The Young Crocs coach Johnny Dominicus told The Kuching Sports News that his boys played a much better game than the opponents who adopted a defensive approach in the match.

The Sabahan coach apologised for the failure to quality for the semifinal.

"The players have tried their best efforts but luck was not on our side.

"However this accomplishment can be a platform for the awakening of the young Sarawakians because this is the State's first quarterfinal in the history of its participation in the Youth Cup.

Johnny was confident that based on the boys' performance in the Youth Cup, the Young Crocs were going to be one of the teams to beat in the Sarawak Cup next month.

He, however, quick to point out that his boys still have a long way to go before they would be matured in football.

"This is not the time to feel proud (of the team's accomplishment) because the mission has not been accomplished," he said in reference to the Sukma Games in 2016.

Johnny also expressed his gratitude to Sarawak FA for entrusting him to shoulder the responsibility to build a strong state junior team.

He also thanked the local fans for their supports during the Youth Cup campaign.

Sarawak started their campaign in the cup on a wrong foot when they were humiliated with a 7-1 defeat.

The Young Crocs, however, started to pick up steam in their second match when they met Sabah (4-1).

The winning streak continued in the subsequent two matches against Kuala Lumpur (6-1) and Malacca (3-1) to enable them to book a place in the quarterfinal.
