SIBU: The Sarawak athletes for the Sukma have been urged to make the coming Sukma the best for the state.
Nangka state assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee said yesterday Sarawak’s Sukma history was very glorious, in which Sarawak became the champion of the Games three times.
“We became the champion of Sukma for three times, namely, in Sarawak when we hosted the Sukma Games 26 years ago, and after that, we won the Games in Ipoh and Kuantan.
“Thus, we hope that the Sarawak athletes will make the Sukma this time the best for them and for Sarawak to become the champion again,” he said while addressing the athletes for volleyball and badminton during the ‘Meet and Greet Sukma 2016 Sarawak Athletes’ at the ground floor of Wisma Sanyan here yesterday.
Dr Annuar also hoped that the Sukma to be held at Sarawak this time, would be the best in the history of the Games.
“Especially in showcasing to our friends from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Brunei, about peace and harmony in Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sarawak State Sports Council assistant director Lucas Kalang Laeng said yesterday’s event aimed to give encouragement and support to the athletes so that they would be more eager to undergo training.
He said Sibu would be the venue for the volleyball and badminton events in the 2016 Sukma Games.
“In today’s event, there are about 70 badminton and volleyball athletes. We also invited athletes from Mukah, Kapit and Sarikei who are also in the Sukma team,” he said.
Yesterday’s event also aimed to promote badminton and volleyball to the people of Sibu, he added.
He hoped that people here and elsewhere would support the Sukma Games which will be held in July.
